The Bishop of Bradford, the Rt Revd David James, became a member of the House of Lords in March. Today (May 7th) he made his maiden speech, in which he spoke about child poverty.

I wonder how many, like me, did not buy their usual copy of the Ilkley Gazette (dated 25th December) over the Christmas period; if so, you will have missed the letters page and, in particular, a letter from the Bishop of Bradford, the Rt Revd David James under the heading ‘Bradford - City of Sanctuary?' The Children's Society holds its special Christingle appeal each year to raise vital funds for the children facing life's harshest challenges.

On Monday, 2nd July at 8. 30 am. a 53/55 seater coach and minibus left Ilkley en route to Burton Agnes.

The theme of this year’s light party was “Journeys”. Balloon rockets raced along the hall, there were competitions to see who could take the longest to ride a bike across the hall, who could build the tallest tower from marshmallows and spaghetti and who could transfer the greatest number of pieces of dried pasta from one bowl to another using … chopsticks.

It seemed like it could be the perfect holiday – optional clubs for the children, Bible teaching for us and lots of warm sunshine in a country renowned for its fine food and wine.  We had been assured by several friends that we would have a great time at Le Pas Opton, the camp site in the Vendée run by Spring Harvest Holidays.
